Spanish Themes were particularly popular among cigar manufacturers of the early 20th century because it was an accepted fact that the finest tobaccos came from Cuba and the Spanish West Indies. Even if a label was inherently American (manufactured in the U.S. and of an American concept) manufacturers would print Spanish terms to add credibility to the label. Manufactured in the American Midwest, "La Balca" is a prime example of an American Made stone lithograph with a completely Spanish theme.
