Description
Unlike the other artists of his era, Vargas would never allow his works to be reproduced as limited editions, let alone sign and number them. However, prior to his death (late 1982), he chose what he considered his best works to be reproduced. This image is one of the artist’s favorite works of art from the 1920’s. As somewhat of an eccentric and definitely an individual, he then chose to sign and number only 50 of each Artist Proof Prints. Fleurs du Mal (Flowers of Evil) is a volume of French poetry by Charles Baudelaire. First published in 1857, the subject matter of these poems deals with themes relating to decadence and eroticisim. In this context, the sultry atmosphere found in Vargas’ work is compelling.
