This rare print, created by the master of the surreal, Salvador Dali, is numbered 40 from the smaller Japanese edition of only 250.
Entitled, Stillness of Time, this color lithograph was one of several woks by Dali emphasizing the fleeting nature of time. In this work Dali imagines a clock or pocket watch, adorned with a crown, as forever intwined with the forces of nature moving as slowly as a growing tree. So much a part of the tree, the pocket watch appears to be dripping sap as the roots of the tree crush and destroy a man-made wall – a wall which cannot stand against time itself. The work is infused with icons such as the elegant human woman covered in cobwebs on the left and the enduring winged angel in contemplation, taking a pose as the thinker.
This work is bright and sharp with no fading and exhibits a wonderful crispness of color – not eroded by time.
This cooperative lithographic print (a print that has met three conditions – it was intended by Dali to be made into a print – the artist supervised the process – the artist personally signed the result) was created by Salvador Dali in 1976.
